A major political controversy erupted in Assam after Bangladesh’s national anthem, “Amar Sonar Bangla,” was allegedly sung at a Congress Seva Dal meeting in Karimganj district. The incident, which took place in Sribhumi town on Monday, triggered a wave of outrage across political circles and social media platforms.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the Congress of pushing a “Greater Bangladesh” agenda to consolidate a particular vote bank in the state. The video of the incident quickly went viral, leading to widespread condemnation and sparking a heated political debate ahead of upcoming local elections.
BJP Calls It a Vote-Bank Conspiracy
Assam Minister Ashok Singhal shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), criticising the Congress for allowing the singing of another nation’s anthem on Indian soil.
“Now it’s clear why Congress, for decades, allowed and encouraged illegal Miya infiltration into Assam — to change the state’s demography for vote-bank politics and create a ‘Greater Bangladesh’,” Singhal said in his post.
The Assam BJP unit also reacted sharply, calling the Congress “Bangladesh-obsessed.” In its statement, the party referenced a recent controversy in which Bangladesh’s interim chief Muhammad Yunus presented a Pakistani general with a book featuring a map that portrayed Assam and other northeastern states as part of Bangladesh.
“Just days after Bangladesh dared to release a map swallowing the entire northeast, Congress workers in Assam are proudly singing Bangladesh’s anthem. If someone still can’t see the agenda at play, they’re either blind, complicit, or both,” the BJP said in a statement on X.
Public Outrage and Social Media Backlash
The viral video has led to massive outrage on social media, with users demanding strict action against those responsible. Many netizens accused the Congress of “betraying national sentiments” and “disrespecting India’s sovereignty.”
One user wrote, “Not a law student, but even common sense says this is treason. If true, these people have no right to live under the Indian flag.” Another added, “Shame on them… having a different ideology is fine, but this is unacceptable.”
Some users also alleged that the Congress was “trying to turn Assam into Bangladesh,” citing the incident as proof of its divisive political intentions.
Congress Yet to Respond
As of now, the Congress has not issued any official clarification regarding the video or the identity of the individuals involved. Meanwhile, BJP leaders have urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to order a detailed investigation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The controversy adds to the growing tension in Assam over issues of illegal immigration and cross-border cultural influence, with political parties trading accusations over national integrity and regional identity.
