Singer-turned-politician Maithili Thakur sparked a strong debate in the Bihar Legislative Assembly after questioning the ground reality of a government hospital in her Alinagar constituency. Raising the issue during Question Hour, the first-time MLA criticised what she described as inaccurate official claims about the facility’s condition and urged authorities to prioritise urgent healthcare improvements.
Thakur challenged a written response presented by Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey, which suggested that the hospital only required minor repairs. She told the Assembly that her personal visit to the site painted a drastically different picture, alleging that the building was in a severely dilapidated state and unable to meet the healthcare needs of thousands of residents.
According to Thakur, medical services at the hospital are currently restricted to a small room due to structural issues and lack of resources. She emphasised that while official records indicated normal functioning, the on-ground reality reflected significant gaps in infrastructure and staffing. Her remarks drew attention from members across party lines, highlighting the growing scrutiny over rural healthcare facilities in Bihar.
The BJP MLA stressed that the area between Alinagar and Ghanshyampur serves a large population, estimated at nearly 40,000 to 50,000 people, making the hospital a crucial lifeline. She pointed out that the facility previously had two MBBS doctors but now relies entirely on AYUSH practitioners, which she said has impacted the quality of treatment available to patients.
Calling the matter a “public appeal” rather than just a political intervention, Thakur urged the government to immediately deploy at least two qualified MBBS doctors and initiate renovation work to restore the hospital’s functionality. Her intervention highlighted broader concerns about healthcare accessibility in semi-rural regions, where infrastructure gaps and staff shortages continue to affect service delivery.
Observers note that the issue reflects a wider conversation about accountability in public health governance. As Bihar continues to focus on improving healthcare outcomes, elected representatives are increasingly raising constituency-specific issues in the Assembly to push for faster administrative action.
Thakur’s remarks also underline the evolving role of younger lawmakers in state politics. Known earlier for her music career, she has been actively highlighting grassroots concerns since entering public office. Her latest intervention has renewed attention on healthcare conditions in Alinagar and the need for transparent reporting on public infrastructure.
With healthcare remaining a priority issue for voters, the demand for better facilities and trained medical personnel is expected to remain a key focus in upcoming legislative discussions. The state government is yet to announce specific timelines for renovation or additional doctor appointments, but the Assembly debate has placed renewed pressure on authorities to address the concerns raised.
