The California State Assembly has officially recognised November 8, 2026, as Diwali Day and encouraged people across the state to participate in celebrations marking the Festival of Lights.

California Assembly Passes Diwali Resolution

The resolution was introduced by California Assembly members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra.

It formally recognises Diwali, which falls on Sunday, November 8, in 2026, and encourages Californians across the state to join the celebrations.

The Assembly described Diwali as an important festival for Indian American and South Asian communities and acknowledged its significance to people around the world.

A Festival Celebrated Across Communities

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, literally translates to "a row of lamps." The festival is celebrated by millions of people, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists, although its religious and cultural significance varies across different communities and traditions.

Known globally as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is traditionally marked by the lighting of diyas and lamps, family gatherings, prayers, festive meals and celebrations.

The California Assembly resolution highlighted values associated with the festival, including unity, joy, generosity, appreciation and reflection.

Diwali's Message of Good Over Evil

The resolution also highlighted Diwali's broader symbolism, particularly the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

It linked the festival with themes of overcoming negativity, embracing positivity, pursuing knowledge and growth, and practising kindness and humility.

For many families, Diwali is also a time for reflection, renewal and strengthening bonds with friends, family and the wider community.

Recognition for Indian American and South Asian Communities

The Assembly's recognition reflects the growing cultural presence and contribution of Indian American and South Asian communities in California.

By officially recognising Diwali Day and encouraging statewide participation, the resolution aims to acknowledge the festival's cultural significance while promoting greater awareness and inclusion across communities.
