The Delhi Capitals Women endured yet another painful finish in the Women’s Premier League as they suffered a six-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women in the WPL 2026 final at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. The loss marked Delhi’s fourth consecutive defeat in a WPL summit clash, extending a streak that has come to define their journey in the tournament’s short but dramatic history.
Led by Jemimah Rodrigues, Delhi Capitals entered the final with renewed momentum after winning the Eliminator, becoming the first side in the league’s history to achieve that feat and still reach the title clash. However, despite setting a challenging total exceeding 200 runs, they were unable to defend it as RCB completed the highest successful run chase ever seen in a WPL final.
For much of the match, Delhi Capitals appeared to be in control. The batting-friendly Vadodara pitch allowed their top order to build a strong total that looked formidable in the context of a high-pressure final. Targets beyond 200 are rarely chased successfully in knockout games, making Delhi strong favourites at the halfway stage.
Yet cricket’s unpredictability unfolded once again. RCB’s batters responded with remarkable composure, gradually shifting the momentum. The defining moment came late in the chase when a crucial dropped catch allowed the opposition to stay alive. That single lapse proved costly as boundaries in the closing overs sealed Delhi’s fate and handed RCB the trophy.
Delhi Capitals’ WPL history has increasingly become synonymous with near misses. In previous seasons, the franchise reached the final under former captain Meg Lanning but fell short each time. The 2026 edition offered hope of a fresh chapter under Rodrigues’ leadership, especially after a season that saw them fight back from early setbacks.
The team had struggled at the start of the campaign, losing three of their first four matches and facing the threat of elimination. A late surge, culminating in an Eliminator victory, revived belief that this could finally be their year. Instead, the result repeated a familiar narrative — strong performances throughout the season undone by heartbreak at the final hurdle.
Despite the defeat, Jemimah Rodrigues emerged as one of the standout figures of the tournament. Taking on leadership responsibilities in a high-pressure environment, she delivered a composed half-century in the final, showcasing resilience and growth as a player.
Her innings reflected a broader evolution in her game. Having faced criticism in earlier finals, Rodrigues stepped up with maturity, guiding Delhi to a competitive total. The performance underlined her potential as a long-term leader in women’s cricket, even as the elusive WPL title continues to evade the franchise.
While the loss will sting, Delhi Capitals’ consistency in reaching finals demonstrates the strength of their squad and structure. Few teams have managed to dominate the league stage and knockout rounds as consistently, even if the ultimate prize remains just out of reach.
For RCB, the victory represents a landmark moment, completing a historic chase and reinforcing their status as one of the strongest sides in the competition. For Delhi, however, the focus will shift toward rebuilding confidence and turning repeated heartbreak into motivation for future seasons.
As the WPL evolves, Delhi Capitals’ journey serves as a reminder that dominance and trophies do not always arrive together. Their challenge now lies in converting experience into triumph — ensuring that the story of repeated final defeats eventually transforms into one of redemption.
