Delhi-NCR Hit by Fog, Cold and Pollution; 148 Flights Cancelled at IGI Airport

Delhi-NCR is grappling with a severe winter crisis as a ‘triple whammy’ of dense fog, cold wave conditions and hazardous air quality disrupted daily life on Wednesday, severely impacting air, rail and road travel across the region.

Low visibility due to persistent fog led to the cancellation of at least 148 flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport by Wednesday morning, causing major inconvenience to passengers during the peak holiday travel period. Several other flights were delayed as visibility dropped sharply during early hours.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation and multiple airlines issued travel advisories, urging passengers to check flight status regularly and arrive at airports well in advance to accommodate weather-related delays and extended security procedures.

Rail services were also affected, with several long-distance trains running behind schedule due to reduced visibility along key routes in North India. Authorities cautioned commuters against non-essential road travel, citing poor visibility and increased risk of accidents on highways and arterial roads.

In addition to fog and cold, air quality across Delhi-NCR remained in the ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ category, compounding health risks for residents. Prolonged exposure to high pollution levels has prompted officials to advise vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, to limit outdoor activities.

Meteorological agencies indicated that cold wave conditions are likely to persist, with fog expected to continue during early morning hours over the next few days. Authorities said monitoring teams remain on alert as the region navigates one of the harshest winter spells of the season.
