Dr A. Velumani Thyrocare journey began far away from the boardrooms of corporate India. Born into a financially struggling farming family near Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Velumani has often spoken about how his difficult childhood shaped his resilience and ambition.

His mother placed strong emphasis on education, helping him pursue studies despite financial challenges. Velumani later began his professional career at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), where he developed an appreciation for discipline, systems and financial prudence.

In 1996, he decided to leave the security of employment and establish Thyrocare with savings of around ₹2 lakh. His vision was to make diagnostic testing more affordable and accessible to a larger section of the population.

Velumani adopted an unconventional approach to building the company. He focused on simple processes, controlled expenses, efficient operations and giving opportunities to fresh graduates. The model helped Thyrocare expand while maintaining a strong focus on cost efficiency.

In 2016, Thyrocare went public at a reported valuation of around ₹35,000 crore.

Velumani’s journey highlights the importance of resilience, financial discipline, efficient systems and hiring people for potential. His story also demonstrates how simple business processes can support large-scale growth.
