Mohanlal's popular Drishyam franchise is set to continue with a fourth instalment. Producer Antony Perumbavoor has confirmed that Drishyam 4 will be made following the success of Drishyam 3, bringing another chapter to the story of Georgekutty.
The announcement was made during the Mazhavil Manorama Awards, where Antony Perumbavoor confirmed that the fourth film in the franchise is on the way.
The development comes months after the release of Drishyam 3, which hit theatres on May 21 and emerged as a major commercial success. The film marked Mohanlal's return as Georgekutty and crossed the Rs 100-crore mark within days of its theatrical release, although audience reactions to the third instalment were mixed.
The Drishyam franchise began in 2013 with director Jeethu Joseph's Malayalam crime thriller. The original film introduced Georgekutty as an ordinary family man whose life takes an unexpected turn, forcing him to make difficult decisions to protect his family.
The film became a major success and was followed by Drishyam 2, which initially premiered on an OTT platform before later receiving a theatrical release. The sequel expanded Georgekutty's story and laid the foundation for the events that followed in the third instalment.
Over the years, the franchise has grown beyond Malayalam cinema, with the original Drishyam being remade in several Indian languages and adapted for international audiences, including Chinese and Korean versions.
Director Jeethu Joseph had previously hinted at the possibility of taking the franchise beyond its third instalment. He had revealed that Antony Perumbavoor had encouraged him to continue thinking about future chapters even while working on the earlier films.
However, Jeethu Joseph had also made it clear that he did not want to rush into another sequel solely because of the commercial performance of Drishyam 3. Developing a fourth instalment would require time to determine how Georgekutty's story and the journeys of the other characters could be taken forward.
With Drishyam 4 now officially confirmed, attention will turn to how Jeethu Joseph expands the story and whether Mohanlal will once again return as Georgekutty, one of the most recognised characters of his career.
