The detention of a five-year-old boy by US immigration authorities in Minnesota has sparked widespread outrage, raising serious questions over enforcement practices under the immigration crackdown led by President Donald Trump. The incident has drawn sharp criticism from school officials, civil rights advocates, and political leaders, who allege that the child was used as leverage during an enforcement operation.
The boy, identified as Liam Conejo Ramos, was detained by masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents after returning home from preschool earlier this week. School authorities in Minnesota stated that the child, who is an asylum seeker, was among four minors detained during the operation. Two of the other minors were 17 years old, while another was aged 10.
According to legal representatives for the family, both the child and his father were taken into custody and transferred to a family detention facility in Dilley, Texas. The family had moved to the United States in 2024 and currently has an active asylum application pending, with no deportation order issued against them.
School administrators alleged that the manner of the detention was deeply troubling. Officials claimed that ICE agents attempted to use the child to draw his mother out of the house after the father was detained. The mother reportedly remained inside the home following advice from her husband, amid fears that she too could be detained. Neighbours, school representatives, and adults from the family reportedly offered to take custody of the child at the scene, but the agents refused.
Footage circulating on social media shows armed officers detaining the child outside his home, while his father was taken away. The visuals have intensified public anger, with many questioning the necessity and proportionality of involving a young child in immigration enforcement actions.
The Department of Homeland Security, however, has rejected allegations that the child was targeted. Officials said the father attempted to flee during the operation and left the child behind, prompting an officer to remain with the boy for safety reasons. The department maintained that the child was kept with his father at the detention facility at the father’s insistence.
Vice President JD Vance defended the actions of immigration officers, echoing the official account that the situation resulted from the father’s actions. He argued that officers had limited options in ensuring the child’s safety while carrying out the detention.
School officials have strongly disputed this narrative. The superintendent of the local school district questioned why a five-year-old would be subjected to such an operation, stating that immigration agents had increasingly been seen near schools, buses, and residential neighbourhoods. The remarks have intensified fears among immigrant families and educators regarding the presence of enforcement agents near children.
The incident has reignited national debate over immigration enforcement and the treatment of minors. Minnesota has emerged as a focal point in the backlash, with growing concerns about the psychological impact of such actions on children from immigrant families.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris sharply criticised the detention, calling it morally unacceptable and accusing immigration authorities of using a child as a tool in enforcement operations. Her remarks reflected broader concerns among opposition leaders over the humanitarian implications of the current immigration approach.
As scrutiny intensifies, the case of Liam Conejo Ramos has become emblematic of the wider controversy surrounding immigration enforcement in the United States. Civil liberties groups continue to demand transparency, accountability, and safeguards to ensure that children are not subjected to traumatic enforcement actions as immigration policies remain under sharp national focus.
