US President Donald Trump has once again sparked controversy with sharp remarks targeting the Somali immigrant community in the United States, accusing them of large-scale financial fraud and calling for deportations. Speaking to reporters, Trump alleged that Somali immigrants were “ripping off” the country, claiming losses amounting to $19 billion, though no official data was cited to support the figure.
In a further escalation, Trump singled out Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, describing her as “a total crook” and suggesting she should be forced to leave the country. Omar, a naturalised US citizen and one of the most prominent Somali-American political figures, represents Minnesota, a state with a large Somali diaspora.
The President alleged that fraudulent activities linked to Somali immigrants were concentrated in Minnesota, asserting that the situation warranted mass deportations. His remarks immediately drew criticism from civil rights groups and political opponents, who accused him of stoking xenophobia and making unsubstantiated claims against an entire community.
Trump’s comments are consistent with his long-standing hardline stance on immigration. During his previous term and throughout his political career, he has repeatedly linked immigration to crime, fraud, and national security risks. Somali refugees, in particular, have often been singled out in his rhetoric, including during the rollout of controversial travel restrictions targeting several Muslim-majority countries.
Analysts note that Trump frequently frames immigration debates around issues of assimilation and security. He has previously argued that certain immigrant communities fail to integrate into American society and impose economic burdens on taxpayers, claims that have been widely disputed by researchers and advocacy organisations.
Ilhan Omar, a vocal critic of Trump’s domestic and foreign policies, has long been a frequent target of his attacks. The President has previously questioned her loyalty, criticised her policy positions, and made personal allegations that have drawn bipartisan condemnation. Omar has consistently rejected such claims, stating that they are politically motivated and rooted in prejudice.
The renewed attack comes amid heightened political polarisation in the US, with immigration emerging once again as a central issue in national discourse. Supporters of Trump argue that his statements reflect public frustration over fraud and misuse of welfare systems, while critics contend that the rhetoric unfairly criminalises immigrant communities and undermines democratic norms.
Experts caution that such remarks can have broader social consequences, potentially fueling hostility toward minority groups. Somali-American organisations have expressed concern over rising hate incidents and misinformation, urging political leaders to rely on verified data rather than inflammatory language.
The White House did not provide additional clarification or evidence regarding Trump’s $19 billion claim. Federal and state agencies have not released figures substantiating allegations of fraud on that scale linked specifically to Somali immigrants.
As debate continues, the episode underscores the deeply divisive nature of immigration politics in the United States. With Trump doubling down on his hardline messaging, his remarks are likely to intensify scrutiny over the role of political rhetoric in shaping public perceptions of immigrant communities and elected representatives alike.
