Hindu festivities in New York City came amid calls for unity following an alleged attack plot targeting a temple in Illinois.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined Hindu New Yorkers for Navratri, Durga Puja, Dashain and Vijayadashami celebrations, calling for unity and solidarity following an alleged mass shooting plot targeting a Hindu temple in Illinois.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Mamdani said he had participated in festive gatherings across New York City, including garba dancing, aarti and Sindoor Khela. He described the celebrations as an opportunity to come together through faith, joy and community, particularly following the reported attempted attack at a Hindu temple in Illinois the previous week.

Mamdani urged people to recognise their shared responsibility to stand against hate and care for one another, concluding his message with “Jai Mata Ki.”

Videos shared on social media showed the mayor participating in celebrations with members of the Indian diaspora in Queens and attending religious festivities at temples across the city.

Illinois Temple Attack Plot Raises Concerns

Mamdani’s appeal followed the arrest of 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine, Illinois, who was accused of attempting to attack a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area on October 11.

According to the report, Paporakis faces one count of making a terrorist threat and one count of unlawful possession of weapons. Authorities said the alleged attack was thwarted after the suspect’s rifle jammed, prompting him to return home.

The incident prompted condemnation from US lawmakers, political leaders and civil society organisations, with calls for stronger action against anti-Hindu and anti-Indian hate.

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, who represents Illinois, said he and his family were at the Aurora temple when the teenager arrived, allegedly intending to carry out a mass shooting.

The allegations have renewed concerns about the safety of Hindu places of worship and Indian-American communities in the United States.

Hindu Festivals Bring Communities Together

Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her various forms, with celebrations involving prayers, fasting, music and community gatherings. Durga Puja, particularly prominent among Bengali Hindus, commemorates the victory of good over evil.

Mamdani’s participation in the festivities and his message against hate highlighted the role of religious and cultural celebrations in bringing communities together amid concerns over targeted violence.
