Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to hold a series of high-level meetings in Siliguri on Saturday, focusing on the security of the strategically crucial Siliguri Corridor and the long-pending political issues surrounding the Darjeeling hills.
The meetings come on the final day of Shah's three-day visit to West Bengal and are expected to bring together security agencies, government officials and political representatives from the Darjeeling region.
The Siliguri Corridor, often referred to as the Chicken's Neck, is a narrow stretch of land connecting India's northeastern states with the rest of the country, making it one of India's most strategically important geographical regions.
Amit Shah to Review Chicken's Neck Security
According to the scheduled itinerary, Shah is expected to chair two back-to-back meetings in Sukna, near Siliguri.
A major focus will be coordination between the Border Security Force (BSF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), intelligence agencies and the state administration.
The region is strategically sensitive because of its proximity to the international borders with Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The Siliguri Corridor serves as the primary land connection between mainland India and the northeastern states.
Strengthening border infrastructure, improving coordination among security agencies and addressing potential vulnerabilities in the corridor are expected to form a key part of the discussions.
Darjeeling Hills Political Solution Also on Agenda
Apart from security, Shah is also expected to discuss the long-standing political demands of the Darjeeling hills.
The BJP has previously promised a "permanent political solution" for the Gorkha community and residents of the region. The issue is expected to be discussed with political representatives and leaders from the hills.
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung and party general secretary Roshan Giri are among the leaders expected to participate. BJP Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, along with other political representatives, may also be involved in the discussions.
However, there was no official confirmation regarding the final list of participants.
Why the Darjeeling Issue Remains Important
The Darjeeling hills have witnessed demands for a separate Gorkhaland state for decades.
Successive governments have attempted to address the issue through political and administrative arrangements, including the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council and the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration.
The BJP's promise of a permanent political solution has raised expectations among hill-based political groups, which have been seeking a stable framework capable of addressing the region's political, economic and administrative concerns.
Any fresh engagement between the Centre and political representatives from the hills could therefore be closely watched.
Shah's Bengal Visit Focuses on Security and Infrastructure
Shah's Saturday meetings follow a series of engagements in Siliguri on Friday.
During the visit, he reviewed border security arrangements, visited the Sashastra Seema Bal Frontier Headquarters and inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several infrastructure projects.
He also inaugurated an exhibition related to India's three new criminal laws at Kawakhali.
The discussions around the Siliguri Corridor come amid the Centre's broader focus on strengthening infrastructure and security in strategically sensitive border regions.
What Happens Next?
The outcome of Saturday's meetings could provide greater clarity on two major issues: India's approach towards securing the Siliguri Corridor and the possibility of renewed political engagement over the Darjeeling hills.
While the security review is expected to focus on coordination and infrastructure, political discussions surrounding Darjeeling could revive debate over what a "permanent political solution" might eventually look like.
For now, Shah's visit has placed the Chicken's Neck security and Darjeeling's unresolved political question at the centre of the agenda in North Bengal.
