Bangladesh Violence: Hindu Man Set on Fire in Shariatpur, Third Attack in Weeks

Fresh concerns over minority safety in Bangladesh have emerged following a brutal mob attack on a Hindu man in the Shariatpur district, marking the third such violent incident against members of the Hindu community reported within a span of a few weeks. The latest victim, Khokon Chandra Das, was allegedly stabbed, doused with petrol, and set on fire by assailants in a shocking act of violence.

According to available details, the attack took place in Shariatpur, where Khokon Chandra Das was targeted by a mob under circumstances that are still being investigated. In a desperate attempt to save his life after being set ablaze, he reportedly jumped into a nearby pond, managing to extinguish the flames. He survived the attack but sustained severe injuries and remains traumatised by the incident.

The attack has triggered outrage among minority rights observers, with the incident being seen as part of a growing pattern of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. The episode comes amid heightened political and social tensions following recent changes in governance under the interim administration led by Mohammad Yunus. Critics argue that the security situation for religious minorities has deteriorated, with repeated incidents pointing to a failure in ensuring adequate protection.

In recent weeks, two other violent cases involving Hindu victims have drawn national and international attention. In Rajbari, Amrit Mandal was killed under circumstances that raised serious questions about communal targeting. Similarly, Deepu Chandradas was lynched to death in Mymensingh, an incident that sparked widespread condemnation and renewed fears within the Hindu community.

Rights groups and community leaders say these incidents are not isolated but reflect a broader atmosphere of intimidation and insecurity faced by minorities. They argue that mob violence, lack of swift accountability, and delayed investigations have emboldened perpetrators. Calls have intensified for stronger law enforcement action, transparent probes, and visible measures to reassure vulnerable communities.

The Shariatpur attack, in particular, has underscored the extreme brutality involved in recent incidents. Setting a person on fire is being described by observers as an act intended not only to harm but also to instil fear among minorities. Social media platforms have been flooded with reactions condemning the violence and demanding justice for the victims.
