A tragic incident involving an Indian student abroad has once again highlighted the risks faced by young migrants living far from home. Thokala Hrithik Reddy, a student from Jangaon in Telangana, died in Germany after jumping from his apartment while trying to escape a fire that broke out in the building.
According to officials and family members, the fire erupted in the apartment complex where Hrithik Reddy was residing during his higher studies. The sudden blaze caused panic among residents, forcing them to make split-second decisions to save their lives. In the chaos, Hrithik reportedly jumped from the apartment in an attempt to flee the flames and thick smoke.
The fall resulted in severe head injuries. Emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors attempted life-saving treatment. However, despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead during treatment. The exact height from which he jumped and the sequence of events inside the building are still being examined by local authorities.
Hrithik Reddy had moved to Germany with aspirations of building an academic and professional future. Friends and relatives described him as focused on his studies and excited about opportunities abroad. His sudden death has left his family in Telangana devastated, while the Indian student community in Germany expressed shock and grief over the incident.
Local authorities in Germany have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and whether safety protocols, such as fire alarms and emergency exits, were functioning properly at the time of the incident. Officials have said that further details will be shared once preliminary findings are completed. At present, no official confirmation has been issued regarding what triggered the blaze.
The tragedy has also renewed concerns over the safety and well-being of Indian students studying overseas, particularly those living in shared apartments or student housing. Many families rely heavily on host-country safety standards, often unaware of the risks or emergency preparedness measures in place.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another distressing case involving a student from Telangana who died abroad under unclear circumstances. Pawan Kumar Reddy, a native of Nalgonda, died in the United States last week after reportedly falling ill. He had travelled to the US to pursue a master’s degree and was also working part-time.
Initial claims circulating on social media suggested food poisoning as the cause of his death, but authorities and medical officials have not confirmed this. Preliminary information has pointed toward a possible cardiac arrest, though a definitive medical conclusion is still awaited.
With two young lives from Telangana lost abroad within a short span, families and student organisations are calling for greater awareness, stronger support systems, and closer monitoring of student welfare overseas. The deaths have sparked conversations around emergency response training, housing safety, and the need for clearer communication between foreign authorities and families back home during such crises.
