Edmonton Gurdwara Stabbing: Police Probe Possible Hate Crime After Two Injured

A violent incident at a Sikh gurdwara in Edmonton has raised serious concerns within the local community after two men were allegedly stabbed during early morning prayers.

The attack took place at the Nanaksar Sikh Gurdwara in northeast Edmonton at around 5 am local time on Friday. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, including whether the attack could have been motivated by hate.

The Edmonton Police Service's Hate Crimes unit is examining the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.

What Happened at the Edmonton Gurdwara?

According to police, a 27-year-old armed man entered the gurdwara and allegedly attempted to access the prayer area.

Staff members confronted the man, leading to an altercation inside the religious premises. During the confrontation, two men aged 75 and 51 were allegedly stabbed.

Witnesses reportedly intervened quickly and managed to restrain the suspect before police arrived at the scene.

The two injured men were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Priest and Volunteer Among Those Injured

Gurdwara representatives identified the victims as a temple priest and a long-time volunteer.

According to accounts from people present inside the building, several worshippers were attending morning prayers when the incident unfolded.

Witnesses alleged that the suspect was armed with a screwdriver and attacked the priest multiple times before turning towards the elderly volunteer.

The suspect was also injured during the incident and was taken to hospital.

Hate Crimes Unit Joins Investigation

Police have not yet established a motive behind the attack.

However, the Edmonton Police Service Hate Crimes unit is investigating whether the stabbing was motivated by hatred towards the Sikh community or another protected group.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to examine the suspect's actions, statements and other evidence to determine whether hate was a factor.

The incident has intensified concerns about the safety of worshippers at religious institutions, particularly as the attack reportedly occurred while morning prayers were underway.

Investigation Continues

Police had reportedly received a call shortly before the stabbing about a man walking in traffic in the area before officers were later called to the gurdwara.

The quick intervention of witnesses prevented the situation from escalating further.

Authorities have not yet announced the final charges or confirmed the motive behind the attack. The case remains under investigation.
