Nepal Floods: Warming Himalayas Linked to Deadly Mountain Collapse

A new scientific analysis has linked the August 26 mountain collapse behind the deadly Nepal-Tibet floods to long-term warming in the Himalayas. Researchers found that a massive section of rock and glacier ice collapsed at around 5,150 metres and fell roughly 1,400 metres, generating a powerful debris flow.

The collapse involved about 2 square kilometres of rock and ice. The resulting surge travelled down the Trishuli River corridor, reaching the Rasuwagadhi border around 22 km downstream in seven minutes. The disaster killed more than 1,300 people, while thousands remained missing according to figures cited in the report.

The analysis suggests that human-caused warming may have increased the slope’s vulnerability by shrinking glaciers and thawing permafrost. Researchers found that the altitude of permanently frozen ground has been rising by about 100 metres per decade. The Langtang Lirung glacier has also retreated by around 500 metres since the 1990s, exposing previously ice-covered rock.

July and August 2026 were reportedly the warmest such months recorded locally, adding to concerns about mountain stability. Researchers stressed that the collapse itself was not an extreme weather event, but that long-term climate change may have contributed to the conditions that preceded it.

The findings come as Nepal seeks international support for climate-related losses and reconstruction following recent disasters.
