IndiGo Aircraft Grounded at Gorakhpur After Tail Impact During Landing

An IndiGo aircraft has been grounded at Gorakhpur airport after a tail impact incident during its landing operation on August 19, 2026.

The aviation incident was reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in accordance with standard operating procedures. The aircraft will remain out of service while necessary inspections and maintenance are carried out.

Aircraft Grounded for Inspection and Maintenance

Airport officials confirmed that the IndiGo aircraft involved in the incident has been grounded at Gorakhpur.

According to information available, the aircraft suffered a tail impact while landing. A detailed inspection is expected to determine the extent of any damage and whether further action is required before the aircraft is cleared to resume operations.

The DGCA has been informed about the incident, while the investigation process is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the landing.

IndiGo Says Flight Made a Go-Around

In its statement, IndiGo said that its flight from Delhi to Gorakhpur carried out a go-around during the landing approach in the interest of safety before subsequently returning for a safe landing.

The airline said all passengers and crew members disembarked safely after the aircraft landed at Gorakhpur.

During a routine post-flight inspection, scratches were observed around the APU inlet, following which the aircraft was taken out of service for maintenance.

IndiGo said the aircraft would resume operations only after receiving the required clearances.

Safety Investigation Underway

A tail impact, often referred to in aviation as a tail strike, occurs when the rear section of an aircraft comes into contact with the runway or another surface during take-off or landing.

Such incidents require inspection because even apparently minor external damage can require a detailed technical assessment before an aircraft is allowed to return to service.

The incident did not result in any reported injuries, and all passengers and crew were safely evacuated from the aircraft after landing.

Flight Number Discrepancy

Initial reports referred to the aircraft as IndiGo flight 6E 2379, while the airline's statement identified the Delhi-Gorakhpur service as 6E 2381. The exact flight number and circumstances of the incident may be clarified through the official inspection or regulatory review.

IndiGo has said that the aircraft will resume operations after maintenance is completed and all necessary clearances are obtained.
