IPL 2026 Mini Auction: Rajasthan Royals’ Spin Crisis and Captaincy Dilemma

IPL 2026 Mini Auction: Rajasthan Royals’ Spin Crisis and Captaincy Dilemma

Rajasthan Royals enter the IPL 2026 mini auction with pressing concerns and limited room for error, as the franchise looks to address a glaring shortage in spin bowling and uncertainty over leadership ahead of the new season.

With Rs 16.05 crore remaining in their purse, the Royals are expected to prioritise an attacking spinner capable of controlling the middle overs and contributing with the bat. The lack of proven spin options in the current squad has left the franchise under pressure to make decisive moves, even if it means breaking the bank for a specialist.

The Royals’ squad has already undergone significant changes. The departure of long-time captain Sanju Samson has brought an end to a defining era, while the arrival of Ravindra Jadeja for a second stint has added experience and balance. Overseas reinforcements Sam Curran and Donovan Ferreira further strengthen the squad on paper, offering depth in both batting and all-round options.

Despite these additions, leadership remains unresolved. Rajasthan Royals have not announced a captain for IPL 2026, fuelling speculation over whether they might target a leadership option during the auction. However, the auction pool offers few clear captaincy candidates, suggesting the franchise may ultimately turn to a retained player for the role.

Spin bowling continues to be the most urgent concern. Following the earlier success of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal, RR attempted to rebuild their spin attack with Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana. That combination failed to deliver consistent results, leading to both players being released. At present, Jadeja and Riyan Parag are the only reliable spin options available to the team.

The current auction list offers limited specialist spinners, making competition fierce and prices likely to surge. Rajasthan’s challenge will be to identify a wicket-taking option who can operate under pressure while fitting into the franchise’s long-term plans.

With squad gaps, leadership uncertainty and a tight budget, the IPL 2026 mini auction could prove pivotal for Rajasthan Royals. The decisions made at the table may define not just their immediate campaign, but the direction of the franchise for seasons to come.

Top Spin Options Rajasthan Royals Could Target

Ravi Bishnoi
A proven IPL performer and Rajasthan native, Bishnoi remains one of the most attractive options available. With close to 200 T20 wickets and an economy rate under eight, he offers reliability and attacking intent, making him a potential big-money target.

Rishad Hossain
The Bangladesh leg-spinner has shown promise in global T20 leagues and international tournaments. His variations and lower-order batting ability make him a developmental option with upside.

Rahul Chahar
An experienced leg-spinner with international exposure, Chahar offers consistency and added batting depth, making him a dependable middle-overs choice.

Vignesh Puthur
The young left-arm wrist spinner from Kerala has impressed in domestic cricket and the IPL. With a strong domestic record, he represents a long-term investment option.

Qais Ahmed
Afghanistan’s leg-spin talent pool continues to grow, and Qais Ahmed fits the mould of a high-impact T20 spinner. While unproven at the IPL’s highest level, he remains a realistic alternative if premium options are snapped up early.
