Jio Launches JioPC: Turn Your Old Laptop, Desktop or TV Into a Cloud PC Without New Hardware

Reliance Jio has launched JioPC, a cloud-based subscription service that allows users to turn an existing laptop, desktop or supported TV setup into a cloud-powered computer without purchasing new hardware.

The service, which was previously limited to JioHome broadband users, is now available to users across India regardless of their telecom or broadband provider.

JioPC works by moving computing tasks from the user's physical device to cloud infrastructure. Instead of upgrading the hardware inside an ageing laptop or desktop, users can access a cloud PC through their existing device.

The service is aimed at users with computers that have become slow, run out of storage or struggle to handle modern applications. Jio says the cloud-based setup can provide users with access to higher computing resources without requiring them to purchase a new computer.

The standard JioPC plan offers 4 vCPU, 8GB RAM and 500GB of cloud storage. The plan is priced at Rs 1,000 for two months, Rs 2,000 for five months and Rs 4,000 for 10+2 months.

JioPC Ultra offers higher specifications, including 8 vCPU, 16GB RAM and 1TB of cloud storage. It is priced at Rs 1,200 for two months, Rs 2,500 for five months and Rs 5,000 for 10+2 months.

According to Jio, users can set up or upgrade to JioPC in less than five minutes without installing new hardware or transferring existing data.

JioPC can also be used beyond traditional laptops and desktops. The service can be accessed through supported web browsers, allowing users to access their cloud computer from compatible devices.

Jio is also offering the option of using JioPC through a TV connected to a supported Jio Set-Top Box. With a keyboard and mouse, the TV can be used as a basic cloud-powered computer.

The company is positioning JioPC as a possible solution for users who want to access modern cloud-based and AI-powered applications on older computers. Since demanding computing tasks are handled through cloud infrastructure, even ageing devices may be able to access software that would otherwise require more powerful hardware.

However, JioPC does not physically upgrade the processor, RAM or storage inside an existing computer. A reliable internet connection is required to access the cloud PC, and the service cannot be used offline.

The cloud environment is based on Ubuntu/Linux and includes LibreOffice along with browser-based applications. As a result, users who depend on specific Windows-only software may face compatibility limitations.

For users primarily focused on web browsing, document work, online learning and cloud-based applications, JioPC could provide an alternative to purchasing a new laptop or desktop while extending the usefulness of older devices.
