Kerala bid an emotional farewell to 10-month-old Aalin Sherin Abraham, whose parents’ decision to donate her organs has been widely praised as an extraordinary act of compassion. The infant, who suffered critical injuries in a road accident earlier this month, became the state’s youngest organ donor and helped save the lives of five critically ill children.
The funeral was held in Pathanamthitta district with full state honours, where hundreds gathered to pay their respects. A ceremonial guard of honour was accorded outside the church during the service, attended by senior leaders and grieving relatives. The state government announced honours as a mark of respect for the child and her parents, who chose organ donation amid profound grief.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the decision as a monumental act of humanity, noting that the child’s gift of life reflects compassion and social responsibility. Public figures and citizens across the country expressed admiration for the family’s courage during an unimaginable loss.
Aalin Sherin Abraham, daughter of Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John, sustained severe injuries in a road accident on February 5 while travelling with her mother and grandparents. Their vehicle was struck by an oncoming car near a junction, leaving multiple family members injured.
The infant was first treated at local hospitals before being shifted to Kochi for advanced medical care. Despite intensive treatment and life-saving efforts, doctors declared her brain dead on February 12. In the midst of their grief, her parents consented to organ donation, allowing their child’s organs to give hope to others.
Following the decision, an extensive coordination effort involving healthcare teams, police, and government authorities ensured the timely transport of the organs. A special green corridor was created to transport the organs from Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram.
Due to aviation restrictions preventing night helicopter transfer, authorities arranged ambulance transport under strict traffic control. Police enforced route clearance and manual signalling, enabling the vehicle to cover nearly 230 kilometres in just over three hours — a critical factor in preserving organ viability.
Her liver was transplanted into a six-month-old infant at a private hospital. The kidneys were allocated to a 10-year-old child at a government medical college. The heart valve was transferred to a cardiac facility within the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College campus, while her corneas were donated to an eye bank, restoring vision to recipients.
The child’s story has moved people across India, with leaders, artists, and citizens praising the family’s courage and selflessness. The decision to donate organs during deep personal loss has been described as a powerful example of humanity and social responsibility.
The infant’s legacy now lives on through the children who received life-saving transplants. Her parents’ choice has also renewed awareness about organ donation and its life-transforming impact.
Aalin Sherin Abraham’s story stands as a reminder that even in tragedy, compassion can create hope — offering new life and healing to families in desperate need.
