Khaleda Zia Responding to Treatment; No Decision Yet on Overseas Medical Transfer

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, who has been critically ill, is showing signs of improvement as she continues to receive advanced treatment at Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital. The 80-year-old leader has been in the ICU since November 23 due to multiple health complications.

Her personal physician, AZM Zahid Hossain, confirmed that Zia is “responding” to treatment and receiving all necessary critical-care support. A multinational medical board — comprising specialists from Bangladesh, the UK, the US, and China — is overseeing her case, with foreign doctors actively participating in night-time reviews.

Despite ongoing speculation, Hossain clarified that no final decision has been taken regarding whether Zia will be flown abroad for further medical care, though the option remains open. He urged the public not to draw conclusions until the medical team provides a definitive assessment.

Zia’s daughter-in-law and doctor, Zubaida Rahman, has been attending medical board meetings since returning from London on December 5. The former PM previously travelled to London for treatment in January aboard an air ambulance arranged by Qatar’s Emir.

For now, doctors say it is too early to determine whether international transfer is necessary, though her current response to treatment is encouraging.
