Lovlina Borgohain delivered a memorable birthday gift to herself as she won Asian Games gold in the women's 75kg boxing category on Friday. The Indian boxer defeated China's Ziyi Bao by unanimous decision to claim the gold medal and end India's 12-year wait for a women's boxing gold at the Asian Games. The victory also put her alongside the country's most celebrated Asian Games boxing champions, including Mary Kom.

The 29-year-old entered the final with history already within reach after becoming the first Indian woman to reach back-to-back Asian Games boxing finals. Having won silver at the previous edition in Hangzhou, Lovlina returned determined to change the colour of her medal.

Against Bao, Lovlina used her height and reach effectively in the opening round. The Chinese boxer, who came into the bout with a 14-fight winning streak, responded with aggressive body shots and tried to close the distance. Lovlina, however, managed to edge the opening round 3-2 on the judges' cards.

The second round saw Bao increase the pressure, but Lovlina relied on her jab, hooks and movement to stay in control. Her work was rewarded as four of the five judges gave her the round. With a lead established, Lovlina adopted a more defensive approach in the final three minutes, forcing Bao to take greater risks.

When the final decision was announced, the Indian contingent erupted in celebration as Lovlina secured the unanimous-decision victory.

The gold also marked a significant turnaround for the Indian boxer after she had settled for silver in her previous major campaign. Lovlina had earlier spoken about studying her mistakes and becoming more consistent in the ring, and her performance in Nagoya showed the benefit of that approach.

The achievement continues India's strong showing at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The official Olympic Council of Asia records Lovlina among India's 2026 boxing contingent in the women's 75kg category.
