India enjoyed a strong day in athletics at the Asian Games 2026 on September 28, with Murali Sreeshankar winning silver in the men’s long jump and Indian javelin throwers Yash Vir Singh and Rohit Yadav securing silver and bronze respectively. India also registered a commanding 10-0 win over Bangladesh in hockey.
Sreeshankar Overcomes Injury Scare to Win Silver
Murali Sreeshankar produced a best effort of 8.07m to secure the silver medal in the men’s long jump. His campaign was briefly disrupted when he landed heavily after his fourth attempt and required medical attention after appearing to hurt his ankle. The attempt was recorded as a foul.
Sreeshankar subsequently passed his fifth attempt but remained in second place as Uzbekistan’s Anvar Anvarov failed to overtake him. China’s Shi Yuhao won gold with a jump of 8.17m.
India Gets Double Podium in Javelin
The men’s javelin final delivered another major boost for India. Yash Vir Singh produced a personal best of 85.72m with his final throw to finish second and win silver.
Rohit Yadav claimed bronze with a best throw of 84.68m. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage took gold after producing a massive 88.55m throw.
The result gave India two medals in the same javelin final, with both athletes finishing comfortably on the podium.
India Thrashes Bangladesh in Hockey
India also recorded a dominant 10-0 victory over Bangladesh in hockey. India led 5-0 after three quarters before adding five more goals in the final 15 minutes.
The Indian team controlled possession and created repeated opportunities, continuing its strong campaign at the Games.
More Athletics Medal Opportunities
India’s men’s 4x400m relay team reached the final after winning its heat in 3:01.49. The women’s 4x100m relay team also advanced to the final.
Earlier, Parul Chaudhary won bronze in the women’s 5000m. Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi made history by becoming the first woman to win three individual athletics gold medals at a single Asian Games.
With several events still underway, India continued to add to its medal tally across athletics and other sporting disciplines.
