Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has delivered a decisive political moment for the Bharatiya Janata Party, steering the party towards a near sweep in Maharashtra’s civic polls and scripting a historic victory in Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The results mark the end of the Thackeray family’s nearly three-decade dominance over the country’s richest civic body and firmly establish Fadnavis as the BJP’s undisputed face in the state.
Ahead of the elections, Fadnavis had confidently projected that the BJP would surpass its previous records. Many political observers remained sceptical, especially after the long-estranged Thackeray cousins reunited and attempted to revive their traditional Marathi identity plank. However, the results delivered on January 16 confirmed that the BJP’s organisational strategy, spearheaded by Fadnavis, had decisively outmanoeuvred its rivals.
The BJP is poised to secure a record number of civic seats across Maharashtra, with its performance in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation standing out as the most significant political shift. For the first time, the BJP has emerged as the single-largest party in Mumbai’s civic administration, positioning it to appoint its own mayor and assume full control of the city’s municipal governance.
For decades, the BJP played a secondary role in Mumbai politics, operating in the shadow of the undivided Shiv Sena. That equation has now changed decisively. The civic verdict signals the BJP’s transformation into the dominant political force in Maharashtra’s urban centres, with Fadnavis as its chief architect.
Despite facing political setbacks in the past — including the loss of power in 2019 and his decision to serve as Deputy Chief Minister after the 2022 realignment — Fadnavis used the intervening years to strengthen the party’s grassroots structure. He focused on expanding the BJP’s presence across Mumbai and its suburbs, investing heavily in booth-level organisation and local leadership development.
His outreach strategy extended beyond the BJP’s traditional voter base. While consolidating support among Gujaratis and North Indians, Fadnavis also made inroads among South Indian communities and worked to challenge the Thackerays’ long-standing hold over the Marathi vote. Projecting himself as a strong Marathi leader, he repeatedly emphasised cultural identity alongside governance and development.
Fadnavis’s deep understanding of civic politics stems from his own early political journey. He began his career as a municipal corporator in Nagpur at the age of 22 and went on to become the city’s youngest mayor at 27. This experience shaped his appreciation of local governance and urban administration, which proved crucial in crafting the BJP’s civic election strategy.
Over the years, his image as a development-focused leader has resonated across age groups. Major infrastructure projects undertaken during his tenure — including metro expansion, large-scale road connectivity initiatives, urban redevelopment schemes and housing projects — have reinforced his reputation as an administrator capable of delivering results.
The civic poll outcome represents a defining chapter in Fadnavis’s political career. By dismantling the Thackeray family’s stronghold in Mumbai, he has altered the balance of power in Maharashtra politics and strengthened the BJP’s position ahead of future electoral battles.
As the party looks ahead to the next assembly elections, the civic verdict is widely seen as a momentum-builder — both for the BJP and for Devendra Fadnavis personally, who now stands as the central figure shaping Maharashtra’s political narrative.
