Mankatha Re-Release Turns Theatres into Festive Arenas as Ajith Fans Go All Out

The re-release of Mankatha has transformed cinema halls into celebration hubs as fans of Ajith Kumar turned up in massive numbers to relive one of Tamil cinema’s most iconic films. The 2011 action thriller, which marked Ajith’s 50th film as a lead actor, returned to theatres on January 23 and was greeted with an overwhelming response across Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

From early morning shows, visuals from multiple theatres captured the scale of fan enthusiasm. Moviegoers were seen dancing in front of the screen, throwing confetti, whistling during punch scenes, and celebrating iconic moments with thunderous applause. Outside theatres, fans poured milk and soft drinks over posters of Ajith, continuing a long-standing tradition associated with major releases and re-releases of his films.

The atmosphere resembled that of a festival rather than a routine screening. In several locations, seats remained empty as fans stood throughout the show, chanting slogans and celebrating the return of the cult classic on the big screen. The celebrations were not limited to Tamil Nadu, with similar scenes reported from theatres in Kerala, underscoring Ajith’s enduring fan base beyond linguistic boundaries.

Mankatha, written and directed by Venkat Prabhu, remains a landmark film in Ajith’s career. The movie stood out for presenting the actor in a grey-shaded role, a departure from his earlier on-screen persona, and went on to gain cult status over the years. Its sharp writing, ensemble cast, and stylish presentation have helped the film retain its appeal even more than a decade after its original release.

Adding to the festive mood, director Adhik Ravichandran, who is set to collaborate with Ajith on an upcoming project, visited Kamala Cinemas in Chennai to celebrate the re-release alongside fans. He was accompanied by Ajith’s manager Suresh Chandra, and both were warmly welcomed by cheering crowds.

Actor Premji Amaren, who played a key role in the film, also joined the celebrations at the same venue. In a light-hearted moment, Premji jokingly warned fans not to reveal the “climax twist,” drawing laughter and applause from the audience.

The ensemble cast of Mankatha includes Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, Lakshmi Rai, Andrea Jeremiah, Vaibhav Reddy, and several others. The film’s music, composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, continues to enjoy massive popularity, with songs from the album still dominating fan playlists.

The re-release has also reignited discussions around Ajith’s influence on Tamil cinema and his unmatched fan loyalty. Even after years away from the screen due to his racing commitments, the actor’s presence continues to command attention and celebration.

Ajith is expected to resume film work soon and will begin shooting for his next project with Adhik Ravichandran in February. Until then, Mankatha’s re-release stands as a powerful reminder of the actor’s cultural impact and the timeless appeal of a film that fans clearly refuse to move on from.
