Meta Muse Spark has been used by mathematicians to work on six major research problems across areas including probability, differential equations, group theory, optimisation, arithmetic physics and non-associative algebra, according to the company.
Meta said five of the problems were previously open questions without established answers. Unlike mathematical Olympiads, where there is a known solution, open research involves developing and testing approaches without knowing whether they will work.
Researchers used Muse Spark 1.1 and 1.2 in Thinking Mode through the standard Meta AI chat interface. Meta said the models were used without custom research modifications.
One project in probability identified a sharp threshold for fitting random Gaussian points in high-dimensional space to an ellipsoid. In differential equations, researchers used the model while working on a long-standing question involving wave collapse in a model inspired by laser physics.
In group theory, Muse Spark generated a GAP search programme that helped researchers identify a counterexample to a proposed mathematical rule. Other projects involved optimisation, connections between number theory and string theory, and non-associative algebra.
Meta said one group of mathematicians worked with the model to develop the arguments, while another group independently reviewed the work.
Meta Launches Muse Gadgets
Alongside the mathematics announcement, Meta introduced Muse Gadgets, an open-source platform intended to allow developers to build hardware compatible with its Muse AI assistant.
The project includes ESP32 firmware and a Linux SDK. Meta has also introduced its own device, Muse Home Link, which connects Muse to home networks and smart devices such as televisions and speakers.
The company said it has manufactured 5,000 Muse Home Link devices that will be given to Muse subscribers. Developers could also use Muse Gadgets to create devices such as E Ink displays, HDMI accessories and touchscreen hardware.
The project expands Meta’s efforts to build a hardware ecosystem around Muse while giving developers tools to experiment with new AI-enabled devices.
