Filmmaker Farah Khan has candidly spoken about her family’s financial struggles and her father’s battle with alcoholism during a heartfelt conversation with close friend Sania Mirza on her podcast. The director opened up about her humble beginnings, insecurities about money, and how she found new purpose through her YouTube channel.
Farah revealed how her family’s life changed dramatically after her parents’ separation. Once living comfortably, her family faced severe financial decline as her father’s alcohol addiction deepened. “We had a whole floor and then we started selling flats. Finally, we came to a one hall and one bedroom after coming from five bedrooms and a huge hall,” she recalled emotionally.
She described how her family survived day-to-day through small card games hosted at their home. “Those ₹30–35 were used to buy milk for the next day, little bhaaji, and my dad’s quarter or half bottle. If they didn’t come to play, there was no milk for the next day. If two extra people came, we used to get excited because that meant mutton for dinner,” she said.
The filmmaker shared how these early experiences left a deep imprint on her. “It was literally hand-to-mouth. I can smell alcohol so well even now — it triggers childhood memories. I used to stay in college late to avoid going home. Till today, I’m insecure about money,” she confessed.
Reflecting on her career today, Farah said she has learned to focus on creative satisfaction rather than external expectations. She also discussed how she began her YouTube journey unexpectedly, saying, “I had just finished writing a new script but didn’t want to wait years for production. So, I started YouTube just for fun — and it hit the bullseye.”
Her channel, which she runs with her cook Dilip, now boasts over 2.7 million subscribers. “Dilip became an internet star overnight. He’s better at cooking than me now — he even copies me perfectly!” Farah joked.
In the same conversation, Sania Mirza called Dilip the “main character” of their vlogs, gifting him presents and teasing Farah that none were for her. Laughing, Farah said, “Dilip has two more brand shoots today — he’s quite the diva now.”
Through her honesty and humor, Farah Khan’s interview shed light on her resilience, her emotional past, and her evolution from a struggling artist to a celebrated filmmaker and digital creator.
