Uttar Pradesh Adds 950 MBBS and 271 PG Medical Seats to Boost Healthcare and Education Infrastructure

In a landmark decision to enhance medical education and healthcare infrastructure, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved a major expansion of medical seats for the academic session 2025–26. The state has added 950 MBBS and 271 postgraduate (PG) seats across its government and private medical colleges, signaling a decisive move toward improving healthcare access and training capacity.

Of the 950 MBBS seats, 200 have been added in three government medical colleges — including 100 seats at the Autonomous State Medical College, Amethi, and 50 each at ESIC Medical College, Noida, and ESIC Medical College, Varanasi. The remaining 750 MBBS seats have been allocated to 12 private medical institutions across the state.

This expansion raises Uttar Pradesh’s total MBBS intake to nearly 12,800, comprising 5,450 seats in government colleges and 7,350 in private colleges — one of the highest figures in the country.

PG Seats Witness Parallel Growth

The postgraduate medical education segment has also received a significant boost, with 271 new MD and MS seats approved. Of these, 233 are in government colleges, while 38 are in private institutions, particularly Narayan Medical College, Kanpur.

Following the expansion, Uttar Pradesh now offers 2,137 PG medical seats in government colleges and 2,160 in private colleges, enhancing opportunities for advanced medical specialization and clinical research.

Strengthening Healthcare Delivery Across the State

This seat expansion aligns with Uttar Pradesh’s broader vision of improving healthcare accessibility in both urban and rural regions. With a growing population and an increasing demand for qualified doctors, the move is expected to bridge the doctor-patient gap and elevate medical education standards.

Officials highlight that the initiative is part of a long-term policy to build a stronger healthcare ecosystem that complements national initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and the National Health Mission.

The inclusion of new seats will not only help accommodate more aspiring doctors but also create a robust pool of skilled medical professionals equipped to serve diverse healthcare needs across the state.

By integrating education expansion with infrastructure development, Uttar Pradesh continues to position itself as a leader in medical education reform — ensuring a more resilient and inclusive healthcare future for India.
