Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday highlighted India’s growing role in driving global economic growth, citing a recent social media post by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk to underline the country’s rising influence. Speaking at the Youth Dialogue on Budget 2026–27, Sitharaman used the reference to counter criticism from the Opposition and to reaffirm the government’s focus on fiscal discipline and long-term capital investment.
Addressing students during the interactive session in Parliament, the Finance Minister drew attention to data shared by Musk based on projections from the International Monetary Fund. According to the IMF’s January 2026 estimates, China is expected to contribute 26 per cent to global GDP growth, while India’s share stands at 17 per cent. Together, the two Asian economies are projected to account for more than 43 per cent of worldwide growth, a figure Sitharaman said reflects a major shift in the global economic landscape.
Referring to Musk’s post, Sitharaman noted that the billionaire had expressed surprise at the scale of India’s contribution, describing it as an indicator of changing global power dynamics. She told the students that such data-driven observations from prominent global figures underline the economic strength India has built over the years. According to her, these numbers convey a message that India is no longer a peripheral player in the global economy but one of its key growth engines.
The Finance Minister also used the occasion to take aim at domestic critics. She said the Opposition must acknowledge the scale of India’s economic progress and the credibility it has earned internationally. While accepting that China’s contribution remains higher, Sitharaman said India is steadily narrowing the gap and strengthening its position as a leading driver of global growth.
Earlier, Musk had shared a chart on social media highlighting the top contributors to global real GDP growth in 2026. Alongside the chart, he remarked that the “balance of power is changing,” pointing to the rising share of Asian economies. The IMF data showed India contributing a larger share to global growth than the United States, which was projected at around 9.9 per cent.
Sitharaman’s remarks came against the backdrop of a volatile global economic environment marked by geopolitical tensions and trade disputes. She suggested that despite external uncertainties, India’s growth outlook remains resilient, supported by structural reforms, sustained public investment, and a focus on long-term economic fundamentals.
The Finance Minister made these comments a day after presenting the Union Budget 2026–27 in the Lok Sabha, her ninth consecutive budget. The budget outlined continued emphasis on capital expenditure, infrastructure development, and initiatives aimed at employment generation, sustainable tourism, and youth engagement. She described the budget as part of a broader roadmap focused on responsibility, growth, and opportunity.

During the Youth Dialogue, around 30 university students who had observed the budget proceedings from the Lok Sabha gallery interacted with the Finance Minister, asking questions on fiscal priorities and India’s economic direction. Sitharaman said engaging with young citizens was important to explain policy choices and to highlight India’s expanding role in shaping global economic trends.
Overall, by invoking IMF data and Musk’s comments, Sitharaman sought to reinforce the narrative that India’s economy is gaining global prominence, even as she urged critics at home to recognise the scale and significance of this transformation.
