Sitharaman Speech Disruption Sparks Political Row Over Jobs and Public Anger

A brief disruption during Nirmala Sitharaman’s speech in Madanapalle has triggered a political clash, with Congress alleging job-related anger and Chandrababu Naidu calling it public enthusiasm.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s speech at an event in Madanapalle, Andhra Pradesh, was briefly interrupted by shouting from the audience, triggering a political dispute over what caused the disruption.

The Sitharaman speech disruption took place on October 2 during an event linked to the launch of the “Global Horticulture Hub – Rayalaseema Rising” project. Sitharaman was speaking about the agriculture initiative when members of the gathering began shouting.

Sitharaman repeatedly asked the audience to listen before Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu stepped in and asked people to sit down. She later completed her address.

The exact reason behind the shouting is not clearly established from the viral footage. However, competing political narratives quickly emerged online.

Congress claims anger over jobs

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh shared the video and claimed the reaction reflected public anger over employment issues. His post suggested that people in the gathering were demanding jobs.

The claim was rejected by Sitharaman, Naidu, Andhra Pradesh minister Nara Lokesh and BJP leaders.

Sitharaman said supporters of the ruling alliance were eager to interact with their leaders and that Naidu had assured them they could meet him and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan after the programme.

Naidu similarly described the crowd as enthusiastic rather than angry. He said the excitement had become disruptive and required him to intervene so that the programme could continue.

Political war over a viral clip

Nara Lokesh accused Congress of spreading misinformation and said there was no protest by local youth demanding jobs. BJP leaders also argued that the viral clip was being interpreted without the full context.

The event involved the foundation stone laying for a proposed Rs 1 lakh crore horticulture hub and the Indian School of Agriculture.

With the audio and footage failing to establish conclusively why the crowd was shouting, the episode has become another political battle over how a viral video should be interpreted.
