The Parliament Budget Session 2026 witnessed strong political activity on Thursday as Opposition leaders led by Rahul Gandhi staged a protest in the Parliament complex over reports of a nationwide shortage of LPG cylinders. The demonstration took place amid growing concerns about cooking gas availability across several parts of the country.
Members of the Congress-led Opposition gathered in the Parliament premises raising slogans and demanding immediate action from the government to address the LPG supply situation. The leaders argued that households across India are facing difficulties in accessing cooking gas cylinders and called for urgent measures to ensure adequate supply.
Rahul Gandhi, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, joined the protest alongside several MPs. The demonstration highlighted the issue of cooking gas availability and its impact on common households. Opposition leaders stated that the government must clarify the reasons behind the reported shortage and ensure that people do not face disruptions in essential household supplies.
The protest also reflected broader political tensions during the ongoing Budget Session. The Congress party criticised the government on social media over the reported shortage, alleging that people are being forced to stand in long queues to obtain LPG cylinders. The remarks sparked a fresh round of political debate between the ruling alliance and opposition parties.
Meanwhile, parliamentary proceedings experienced disruptions during the day. The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 12 noon, following heated discussions and ongoing political developments in the House.
Earlier in the session, the Lok Sabha also witnessed another major development when an impeachment motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was defeated through a voice vote after a strong debate between the government and Opposition members. Following the rejection of the motion, the Speaker resumed the Chair in the House.
In another political development, a senior Opposition MP announced plans to move an impeachment motion against the Chief Election Commissioner of India, alleging concerns regarding electoral processes and voter list issues. The Opposition claimed that several parties are supporting the move and that the proposal may soon be formally submitted in Parliament.
Alongside the political confrontations, parliamentary committees are also scheduled to hold important meetings during the day. One of the committees will review India’s maritime strategy, while another committee related to the petroleum sector is expected to discuss energy-related issues.
The developments reflect the intense political atmosphere during the Budget Session, where debates over governance, economic issues, and public welfare are dominating parliamentary discussions. The LPG shortage issue has now become a major political talking point, with opposition parties demanding accountability and immediate government intervention.
As the session continues, further debates and political exchanges are expected both inside and outside Parliament regarding the supply of essential resources and broader governance matters.
