Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has invited INDIA bloc leaders, opposition MPs, student organisations and civil society members to his residence for a meeting over what he describes as a people's movement to protect democracy.
In a post on X on Tuesday, October 13, Gandhi said the gathering would be followed by a joint media interaction. He emphasised opposition unity, stating that the participants would present their position together and continue their movement.
According to sources cited in the report, the meeting is expected to discuss a coordinated strategy for protests against alleged “vote chori” and demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
INDIA Bloc Steps Up Protest Coordination
The proposed tea meeting follows a day of demonstrations in New Delhi, where opposition leaders, activists and civil society members held a “March for Democracy” against alleged electoral irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The march drew several prominent opposition figures, including Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, CPI leader D Raja, CPI(M) leader M A Baby, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and NCP-SP leader Supriya Sule.
Protesters gathered in central Delhi's Connaught Place before moving towards the Supreme Court. The march encountered barricades on Bhagwan Dass Road, where demonstrators were stopped after crossing one barricade.
Opposition Leaders File Joint Petition
Following the demonstration, senior INDIA bloc leaders went to the Supreme Court to submit a joint petition concerning SIR and alleged electoral irregularities.
The petition names the Election Commission of India, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi as parties.
The development came after the Chief Justice of India declined a request to meet the Leaders of Opposition on the issue, citing the matter's sub judice status.
Joint Media Address Expected
Gandhi's invitation signals a further effort to coordinate the opposition's public response. The planned media interaction is expected to provide a platform for participating leaders and organisations to present their demands collectively.
The dispute centres on allegations of voter-related irregularities and concerns over electoral roll revisions. These remain contested claims, with the Election Commission's position and the outcome of the legal proceedings relevant to assessing the issues raised.
