Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma recently shared an intriguing detail about the filming location of his iconic horror movie Bhoot. According to the director, the apartment where much of the film was shot has reportedly remained vacant since the movie’s release in 2002.
Varma made the revelation during a special screening of Bhoot at the Red Lorry Film Festival 2026 held in Mumbai. Speaking about the film’s production, the director mentioned that the apartment used for shooting is located in the well-known Lokhandwala Complex in the city.
The filmmaker said that after the film gained popularity, the apartment became widely recognised as the setting of the horror story. As a result, several potential buyers and tenants reportedly chose not to move into the flat over the years.
Bhoot, released in 2003, is considered one of the most memorable horror films in Indian cinema. The movie starred Ajay Devgn and Urmila Matondkar in lead roles and was praised for its atmospheric storytelling and intense performances.
Unlike many horror films of its time, Bhoot relied heavily on psychological tension and realistic settings rather than elaborate visual effects. Much of the film’s narrative unfolds inside a single apartment, which contributed to the film’s unsettling atmosphere.
The apartment used for the shoot played a central role in creating the eerie mood of the movie. According to Varma, once audiences associated the flat with the horror film, it gained a reputation that made many people hesitant to live there.
Varma explained that the property became widely known after the film’s release, and over the years it developed a certain mysterious reputation among potential residents. Despite being located in one of Mumbai’s popular residential areas, the apartment has reportedly remained unoccupied since the shooting ended.
The story quickly sparked curiosity among fans of the film and horror movie enthusiasts. Many viewers found the revelation both surprising and intriguing, especially given the long period since the movie was released.
The director shared the anecdote while reflecting on the impact of Bhoot during the special screening event. The film continues to be remembered as one of the standout horror movies from early 2000s Indian cinema.
Ram Gopal Varma is widely known for experimenting with different genres, including crime, thriller, and horror films. Bhoot remains one of his most successful attempts in the horror genre and continues to be referenced in discussions about Indian horror cinema.
The filmmaker’s revelation about the apartment has added an unusual real-life twist to the legacy of the film. For many fans, the idea that the shooting location may have remained empty for more than two decades adds another layer of mystery to the story behind Bhoot.
The anecdote also reflects how powerful cinematic storytelling can influence public perception of real-world places, especially when those locations become strongly associated with a memorable film.
