Smit Machchhar is in stable condition after being seriously injured during a cockpit confrontation aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The Indian captain was reportedly attacked by his co-pilot during the flight, but his actions helped passengers and crew intervene before the aircraft made a safe emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.

The incident took place aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 people. After the confrontation, the aircraft experienced a sharp loss of altitude and was diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

Machchhar was taken to a hospital in Tabuk following the incident. Indian officials said he was receiving treatment and remained in stable condition, while Indian diplomatic authorities were in contact with his family and Saudi officials.

According to accounts reported by Israeli and international media, Machchhar was injured after the co-pilot allegedly attacked him in the cockpit. Despite his injuries, he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers, crew members and other pilots on board to intervene and restrain the co-pilot.

The aircraft was subsequently brought under control and diverted to Saudi Arabia. The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation.

Indian and Israeli leaders praise pilot

The incident drew public praise from both India and Israel. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Machchhar as a hero and praised his courage during the emergency. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also called the Indian captain a “true hero” for his actions.

Machchhar has more than 13 years of commercial aviation experience and previously worked with SpiceJet before joining Flydubai in June 2022. Reports say he has accumulated more than 9,500 flight hours during his career.

The alleged attacker, identified by Israeli officials as an Omani national, was restrained after passengers and crew gained access to the cockpit. Saudi authorities are investigating the incident, while officials continue to monitor Machchhar’s recovery.
