Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed head coach of Delhi Capitals for the IPL 2027 season. The appointment marks Ganguly’s first head coaching role in the Indian Premier League after several years of involvement with the franchise in different positions.
Ganguly has been associated with Delhi Capitals since 2019 and has worked as Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams. He will replace Hemang Badani, who was in charge for the previous two seasons.
Ganguly Returns to the Capitals Dugout
Delhi Capitals have also decided to part ways with bowling coach Munaf Patel, team director Venugopal Rao and assistant coach Ian Bell. The franchise finished sixth in IPL 2026 after ending the previous season in fifth place.
Ganguly is expected to bring his own coaching staff. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has also been widely linked with a possible role in his support team.
The 54-year-old has already experienced a head coaching position in the SA20, where he oversaw Pretoria Capitals and guided them to the final. His move to the IPL now gives him an opportunity to build a team in a competition he has been closely associated with for years.
Ganguly said his focus would be on creating a strong and fearless Delhi Capitals side.
Delhi Capitals Prepare for IPL 2027
Ganguly will work with a leadership group featuring captain Axar Patel and senior batter KL Rahul. Delhi also brought Rishabh Pant back from Lucknow Super Giants following IPL 2026, adding further experience to their Indian core.
Delhi Capitals chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal welcomed Ganguly’s appointment, highlighting his long association with the franchise and his leadership experience.
Ganguly will now oversee the team’s preparations for the IPL auction later this year. With IPL 2027 expected to be the final season before the next mega auction, major changes to the squad are unlikely.
His appointment follows Chennai Super Kings naming Zaheer Khan as their head coach for IPL 2027, bringing Stephen Fleming’s long tenure with the franchise to an end.
