The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond has witnessed a slowdown at the box office after its opening weekend. The Hindi film, which released amid controversy and legal scrutiny, has collected Rs 12.8 crore net in India after four days in theatres.
The sequel, directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, hit cinemas following clearance from the Kerala High Court and certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Despite the legal hurdles being cleared before release, the film has not matched the strong box office momentum of its predecessor, The Kerala Story.
According to early trade estimates, The Kerala Story 2 earned over Rs 10 crore during its opening weekend. However, collections dropped significantly on its first Monday. The film collected Rs 0.75 crore on Day 1, followed by Rs 4.65 crore on Day 2 and Rs 4.75 crore on Day 3. On Day 4 (Monday), earnings fell to Rs 2.65 crore, indicating a dip in audience turnout.
With these figures, the film’s total domestic net collection stands at Rs 12.8 crore, while the gross collection is reported to be approximately Rs 15.1 crore. The Monday occupancy rate further reflected the slowdown, with an overall Hindi occupancy of 8.75 percent. In the box office cycle, weekday drops are common, but the scale of the dip often determines a film’s long-term run.
The film features performances by Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia, Aishwarya Ojha, Sumit Gahlawat and Arjan Singh Aujla. The sequel attempts to expand the narrative introduced in the first film but has faced challenges in sustaining audience interest.
The release was initially delayed after concerns were raised regarding alleged misrepresentation and the potential for communal tension. A stay order by a single-bench judge was later lifted by a division bench, allowing the film to release as scheduled after receiving CBFC approval.
Industry observers note that while controversy can sometimes boost initial curiosity, sustained box office success depends on audience reception and word-of-mouth. The coming weekdays will be crucial in determining whether The Kerala Story 2 can stabilise its collections or face further decline.
As the film continues its theatrical run, trade analysts will closely track its performance to see if it can recover momentum in the coming days.
