Tripura Student Killed in Dehradun Attack Suffered Paralysis, Report Reveals

A medical report from Graphic Era Hospital has detailed the severe injuries suffered by 24-year-old Tripura student Angel Chakma, who died days after a violent racial attack in Dehradun, leading police to invoke murder charges in the case.

According to the hospital’s clinical findings, Angel Chakma sustained serious head, back and spinal injuries during the assault. The report revealed complete loss of power on the right side of his body, affecting both upper and lower limbs, along with sensory impairment. Doctors also recorded fissures in the brain, spinal cord damage, a deep laceration on the back, another injury on the occipital region of the head, and multiple abrasions on his foot.

The incident occurred on December 9 in the Selakui police station area, where Angel Chakma and his brother were allegedly subjected to racial abuse at a roadside canteen. When the brothers objected to the slurs, the confrontation escalated into violence. Angel was reportedly attacked with a sharp-edged weapon and a metal kada, causing him to collapse at the spot.

He was rushed to hospital in critical condition and remained under treatment for over 17 days before succumbing to his injuries on December 26.

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh said the accused appeared to be intoxicated and that the situation escalated rapidly. Following the death, police added murder charges to the case and intensified the investigation.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family, an FIR was registered and a special investigation team was formed. Five accused have been arrested so far, including two minors who have been sent to a juvenile reform facility. One suspect is absconding and is believed to have fled to Nepal. Police have announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for information leading to his arrest and have dispatched a team to assist in tracking him down.

Reacting to the incident, Pushkar Singh Dhami termed the attack completely unacceptable and assured strict action against those responsible.

The case has triggered widespread outrage, with authorities stating that further investigation is underway to ensure accountability and justice for the victim.
