Trump Shares India Gate Image, Signals Plan for Massive ‘Independence Arch’ in Washington

Former US President Donald Trump has once again sparked debate with a striking social media post, this time drawing inspiration from one of India’s most recognisable monuments. Trump shared an image of India Gate on his social media platform Truth Social, praising the British-era structure and suggesting that the United States should build an even grander triumphal arch of its own.

In his post, Trump described India Gate as a “beautiful triumphal arch” and added that the American version would be “the greatest of all.” The message comes amid reports that Trump is pushing ahead with plans for a massive monument in Washington, DC, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, which is being marked this year.

According to reports in the US media, Trump has been closely involved in discussions around the proposed structure, tentatively called the “Independence Arch.” The monument is envisioned as a towering new landmark that would symbolise the nation’s history and power, while also leaving a lasting visual impact on visitors to the capital.

The proposed arch is expected to be built near the Potomac River, in close proximity to Washington’s most iconic sites. Trump has reportedly favoured a structure standing around 250 feet tall—significantly higher than many of the city’s existing landmarks. By comparison, the Lincoln Memorial rises to about 100 feet, while the White House stands at roughly 70 feet.

Sources familiar with the discussions have said that smaller versions of the arch were initially considered, including designs measuring 165 feet and 123 feet. However, Trump is said to have rejected those options in favour of the tallest possible structure, arguing that a milestone as significant as the 250th anniversary of independence deserves a monument of unprecedented scale. He has reportedly used the phrase “250 for 250” to justify the ambitious height.

The idea, while bold, faces several procedural and logistical hurdles. The proposed site—Memorial Circle—falls under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service, meaning that the project would require multiple layers of federal approval before construction could begin. As of now, final design plans have not been submitted to the relevant review panels, and officials have not provided a clear timeline for regulatory clearance.

Trump has nevertheless expressed optimism about the schedule. In earlier remarks to US media, he suggested that construction could begin within months, signalling his desire to fast-track the project ahead of anniversary celebrations. Whether that timeline is feasible remains uncertain, given the scale of the structure and the approvals required.

The comparison to India Gate has also drawn attention because of the monument’s symbolism. Located in the heart of New Delhi, India Gate commemorates soldiers who died during World War I and has long stood as a symbol of sacrifice and national memory. Trump’s admiration for the structure appears to have reinforced his vision of creating a similarly iconic—though far larger—monument for the United States.

As discussions continue, the proposed Independence Arch has already become a talking point in Washington, raising questions about cost, aesthetics, and the broader message such a towering structure would send.
