Trump to Take Xi Jinping to National Archives as US-China Summit Ends

US President Donald Trump is set to conclude Chinese President Xi Jinping’s three-day state visit to Washington with a tour of the National Archives on Friday. The leaders are expected to view historic documents including the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The visit follows a high-profile state dinner and a 90-minute meeting between Trump and Xi at the White House. The two leaders discussed major issues in US-China relations, including trade, artificial intelligence and broader international matters.

While the summit featured several ceremonial events and public displays of cooperation, reports indicated that it did not produce a major new agreement on the central areas of bilateral tension. At the same time, both sides indicated an interest in continuing dialogue on artificial intelligence and other areas of cooperation.

The National Archives visit comes as the United States marks its 250th anniversary. The institution is hosting a special exhibition titled “The American Story”, featuring historic documents and material covering different chapters of US history.

Trump had earlier said he wanted to show Xi some of America’s historic treasures. Xi is expected to leave Washington after the National Archives visit, bringing his US state visit to an end.
