In a significant decision aimed at providing relief to residents, the government of Uttar Pradesh has announced a temporary halt on the rollout of smart electricity meters. The move comes amid growing concerns and feedback from consumers regarding the new system.
The announcement was made by Energy Minister A K Sharma following a departmental review meeting, highlighting the government’s intent to address technical and public concerns before proceeding further.
One of the most notable aspects of the decision is the assurance that electricity supply will not be immediately cut off, even if the smart meter balance reaches zero. Officials confirmed that consumers will continue to receive power for a limited period despite exhausted balance, ensuring uninterrupted supply.
Additionally, authorities indicated that once smart meters are installed, consumers are unlikely to experience any power disruption for up to 45 days, providing a buffer period for users to adapt to the system.
The government has decided to pause the installation of smart meters across the state until further review. This decision has been taken pending the findings of a four-member technical committee, which is currently evaluating the implementation and performance of the system.
The committee’s report is expected to guide the next steps, including whether modifications or improvements are required before resuming the rollout.
The smart meter initiative was originally introduced to improve billing transparency, reduce electricity losses, and promote efficient energy consumption. However, concerns regarding billing accuracy and user experience prompted the government to reassess its implementation strategy.
Officials have stated that consumer convenience remains a top priority, and any future rollout will incorporate feedback and technical improvements to ensure smooth functioning.
The pause reflects the government’s attempt to balance technological advancement with public trust. By temporarily halting the rollout and reviewing the system, authorities aim to prevent potential issues and ensure that the transition benefits both consumers and the power sector.
The decision has been welcomed by many consumers who had expressed concerns over prepaid billing systems and possible sudden disconnections.
The future of smart meters in Uttar Pradesh will largely depend on the findings of the technical committee. Based on the recommendations, the government is expected to refine its approach and reintroduce the system with improved safeguards.
Until then, consumers can expect continued electricity supply without immediate disruptions, marking a significant relief in the ongoing transition toward digital energy management.
