Air conditioning is now closely associated with keeping homes, offices and other indoor spaces cool during hot weather. However, the first modern air-conditioning system was not invented to make people comfortable. Its original purpose was to control humidity and solve an industrial production problem.
In 1902, Willis Carrier, a young engineer working for the Buffalo Forge Company, was asked to address humidity issues at a printing plant in Brooklyn, New York. The Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing and Publishing Company was facing difficulties because changes in moisture levels affected the paper used for colour printing.
As humidity changed, the paper expanded and contracted, making it difficult to accurately align different colours on the same sheet. Excess moisture also affected the ink and created problems in the printing process. For the company, controlling humidity was essential for maintaining consistent production.
Carrier developed a system designed to regulate the moisture content of the air. On July 17, 1902, he completed the drawings for what later became recognised as the first modern air-conditioning system.
The system worked by passing air over coils containing cold water. When warm and humid air came into contact with the cold coils, moisture condensed and was removed from the air. As a result, the air became both cooler and less humid.
The main objective was humidity control rather than human comfort. The system was designed to maintain approximately 55 per cent relative humidity inside the printing facility. It was installed during the summer of 1902, and an ammonia compressor was added the following year to support operations during periods of higher demand.
The technology helped stabilise the paper and made the printing process more reliable. However, the humidity-control process also had another noticeable effect: the air inside the facility became cooler.
This unexpected benefit gradually changed the way people viewed air-conditioning technology. Carrier began developing similar systems for industries where temperature and humidity could affect production. Textile mills were among the early users, as moisture levels could influence manufacturing processes.
The use of air conditioning for public comfort developed gradually. Mechanical cooling gave people an early experience of cooled indoor spaces at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. By the 1920s, improved air-conditioning systems began appearing in theatres, where comfortable indoor temperatures became an important attraction for audiences.
Early air-conditioning systems were large and designed mainly for industrial or commercial use. In 1913, a residential air-conditioning system was sold for a mansion in Minneapolis, but the technology remained too large and expensive for widespread household use.
It took several decades for air-conditioning systems to become smaller, more affordable and practical for ordinary homes. After the Second World War, air conditioning gradually became more common in residential spaces.
Over time, the original purpose of air conditioning was largely forgotten. A technology created to regulate humidity and prevent paper from expanding and contracting eventually became one of the most widely used solutions for keeping people comfortable during hot weather.
The history of air conditioning therefore began not in a home or office, but inside a printing plant. Willis Carrier's original goal was to control humidity so that industrial printing could function more efficiently, while cooling people became one of the technology's most important uses later.
