Upendra Backs Kannada Language Demand on Telugu Film Posters in Karnataka
Kannada actor Upendra has weighed in on the ongoing controversy over the absence of Kannada language on Telugu film posters displayed in Karnataka. The issue has escalated in recent weeks, with pro-Kannada groups protesting outside theatres and demanding that promotional materials for Telugu releases include Kannada text.
Speaking to ABN during promotions for his upcoming film Andhra King Taluka, Upendra said that the expectations of Kannada-speaking audiences are justified. “If a film is released in Karnataka, they want to watch it in the Kannada language. What is wrong with that?” he said, emphasising that regional language representation is a matter of respect.
Upendra also highlighted the success of dubbed films in Karnataka, citing the Kannada version of Pushpa, which reportedly collected over ₹10 crore. When clarified that the current debate concerns posters and advertisements rather than dubbing, the actor maintained that Kannada audiences are simply asking for linguistic recognition.
Pro-Kannada activists have intensified their demonstrations across Karnataka, objecting to Telugu posters that contain no Kannada text. Some protests have turned aggressive, with activists demanding that titles and key promotional details be displayed in Kannada for any film releasing in the state.
Upendra stressed that respecting the local language is essential, especially as the Indian film industry increasingly adopts multilingual promotion strategies. “When releasing a film, you also have to respect the language. There is nothing wrong with that,” he said.
The actor will next appear in the Telugu film Andhra King Taluka, starring Ram Pothineni and Bhagyashri Borse, set to release on November 27.
