Viral Photo of Grieving Husband Becomes Symbol of Hong Kong’s Deadliest Fire

A heartbreaking photograph of a 71-year-old Hong Kong man, known only as Wong, has become the defining symbol of the catastrophic Wang Fuk Court blaze that killed at least 156 people and left dozens missing.

Wong was on his way to pick up his granddaughter when he noticed smoke rising from his residential complex in Tai Po. By the time he rushed back, flames were erupting from the tower where his wife was trapped. His anguished cry — “My wife is inside” — captured by Reuters photographer Tyrone Siu, went viral globally, encapsulating the unimaginable grief of the city’s deadliest fire since 1948.

A week later, Wong’s wife remains among the 30 missing. His son told Reuters that the family is sharing their story as a step toward healing. According to authorities, the massive blaze spread rapidly across seven high-rises due to substandard insulation foam and plastic mesh used during recent renovations.

Wong, a retired building maintenance foreman, had long been worried about the fire hazards in the complex and had even replaced window materials and kept the mesh damp to reduce risks. But his precautions could not prevent the disaster.

As rescuers searched the ruins, Wong stayed outside through the night, collapsing in grief and repeatedly whispering toward the burning tower: “I will come find you.”
