Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2: Zoya Akhtar Confirms Sequel in Early Stages

Fifteen years after Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara became one of Bollywood's most loved friendship films, filmmaker Zoya Akhtar has confirmed that discussions around a sequel are underway.

Speaking at the Monsoon Film Festival, Zoya said the team is exploring a follow-up to the 2011 film but stressed that the project is still at an early stage.

The filmmaker's comments will likely reignite excitement among fans who have been waiting to see Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol reunite as Arjun, Imran and Kabir.

However, there is currently no confirmed release date or official production announcement for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2.

Zoya Akhtar confirms ZNMD sequel is being considered

The possibility of a sequel gained momentum after the three lead actors reunited for a 2025 Yas Island advertisement.

Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol appearing together once again immediately reminded fans of their characters from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

The reunion also sparked widespread speculation that a second film could be in development.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the Monsoon Film Festival, Zoya confirmed that the team is considering the idea.

“We are on it,” she said.

At the same time, she made it clear that there is still uncertainty about where the project will ultimately go.

Zoya said the challenge is to see whether the team can reach a point where the story feels right for the characters as they are today.

That distinction is important because the original film was released in 2011, meaning the characters and the actors would naturally have moved into a very different stage of life.

Will Hrithik, Farhan and Abhay return for ZNMD 2?

The original trio remains at the centre of speculation around the sequel.

Hrithik Roshan played Arjun Saluja, the ambitious financial professional who initially struggles to disconnect from work.

Farhan Akhtar played Imran Qureshi, the aspiring writer whose search for his biological father forms one of the film's emotional threads.

Abhay Deol played Kabir Dewan, a wealthy businessman preparing to marry while struggling with questions about his future.

The 2025 commercial featuring the three actors together created renewed demand for the characters to return.

However, Zoya's latest comments do not amount to confirmation that all three actors have formally signed on for a sequel.

The central question is whether the filmmakers can find a story that naturally continues their lives rather than simply recreating the road-trip formula of the original.

Why the 2025 reunion created so much excitement

When Hrithik, Farhan and Abhay appeared together in the 2025 advertisement, many fans initially believed they were seeing the first glimpse of a Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara sequel.

Zoya later revealed that audiences even assumed the commercial was a trailer.

The excitement quickly turned into disappointment when viewers realised it was only an advertisement.

Zoya recalled the reaction to the commercial, saying that people initially celebrated the reunion before some fans expressed their frustration after discovering it was not a film.

That reaction demonstrated how strong the demand for a second ZNMD remains even 15 years after the original.

What could ZNMD 2 be about?

Zoya has not revealed the storyline for a potential sequel.

Her comments, however, suggest that the filmmakers are thinking about where these characters would be in their lives today rather than simply repeating their original journey.

That could allow a sequel to explore themes such as:

  • Friendship after adulthood
  • Marriage and family
  • Career pressures
  • Changing priorities
  • Mid-life uncertainty
  • Relationships
  • Personal fulfilment
  • How old friendships evolve over time

The original film centred on three friends confronting their fears during a road trip through Spain.

A sequel would therefore have to balance the nostalgia audiences expect with a story that reflects the characters' lives 15 years later.

Zoya Akhtar responds to criticism of her films

Zoya also addressed criticism that several of her films focus on the problems of wealthy or privileged characters.

Films such as Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Dil Dhadakne Do examine family, relationships and personal conflicts among affluent characters.

Zoya said she is no longer particularly bothered by the criticism.

She pointed out that she has made films dealing with very different subjects, including Luck by Chance, Gully Boy and Lust Stories.

Her position is that filmmakers should be able to tell stories about different kinds of people and that audiences are free to decide whether those stories resonate with them.

Interestingly, she noted that some people who criticise her for making films about privileged characters are also the same people asking her to make another Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

When did Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara release?

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was released in 2011 and was directed by Zoya Akhtar.

The film starred:

  • Hrithik Roshan
  • Farhan Akhtar
  • Abhay Deol
  • Katrina Kaif
  • Kalki Koechlin
  • Naseeruddin Shah

The story followed three friends who travel across Spain as part of a bachelor trip and undertake a series of adventures that force them to confront personal fears and unresolved issues.

The film was shot across Spain, India and the United Kingdom.

Made on a reported budget of around Rs 45 crore, it went on to earn approximately Rs 153 crore worldwide, according to the figures cited in the original report.

Over the years, the film has developed a strong cult following and remains particularly popular for its portrayal of friendship, travel and personal growth.

Is Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2 officially confirmed?

Not yet.

Zoya Akhtar has confirmed that the team is working on the possibility of a sequel, but the project remains in its early stages.

There is currently no confirmed:

  • Release date
  • Shooting schedule
  • Final script
  • Official production timeline
  • Confirmed returning cast announcement

For now, fans have Zoya's “we are on it” as the clearest indication that Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2 is being seriously considered.

The biggest challenge will be creating a story that can bring Arjun, Imran and Kabir back without relying solely on nostalgia.

If Zoya and the original cast can find that story, the 15-year wait could finally lead to another journey with the three friends.
