At least 11 people were injured after a dispute during Holi celebrations escalated into a violent clash between two groups in a village in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh, police officials said.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Tikaria village, where a disagreement over playing with colours quickly turned into a physical confrontation, creating panic among local residents.
According to police sources, the clash began after an argument broke out between two groups regarding playing Holi colours. What started as a minor disagreement rapidly escalated into a violent fight.
Witnesses said members of both groups allegedly attacked each other using sticks, batons and iron rods. The confrontation reportedly continued for around ten minutes, causing fear and chaos in the area.
Residents nearby said the sudden outbreak of violence disrupted the festive atmosphere of the village during Holi celebrations.
Villagers present at the scene attempted to intervene and separate the two groups in an effort to stop the violence.
Shortly after the incident was reported, police personnel reached the village and managed to control the situation. Officers spoke to both sides and worked to calm tensions that had developed following the clash.
Authorities said the situation in the village is now under control, although security monitoring continues as a precaution.
Police confirmed that eight people from one group and three from the other sustained injuries during the clash.
All injured individuals were taken for medical examination and treatment following the incident.
Officials stated that the medical reports will help determine the nature and seriousness of the injuries as part of the investigation.
One of the villagers involved in the incident alleged that members of the opposing group entered his house when no male members were present and assaulted family members inside.
He claimed that when he and other villagers attempted to intervene, they were also attacked during the confrontation.
The villager further alleged that several people held him and assaulted him with a knife during the fight.
Police officials said these claims will be verified during the investigation.
Local police confirmed that complaints have been filed by members of both groups following the incident.
Authorities stated that a case will be registered based on the complaints received and the outcome of the investigation.
Police are also examining videos related to the incident, which may help identify those involved and clarify the sequence of events.
Officials have urged residents of the village to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumours as the investigation continues.
Despite the violent clash, authorities said the situation is currently stable and security forces remain alert to prevent any further tension in the area.
