5 Indians rescued in Strait of Hormuz were safely brought ashore after the Kuwait-flagged tanker MT Kazimah III was struck by a projectile, India’s Embassy in Muscat said.
The embassy coordinated the rescue of the five Indian nationals aboard the tanker after the incident. It also thanked Omani authorities for their support and assistance during the rescue operation.
The incident occurred amid heightened tensions in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
The vessel’s identification as MT Kazimah III was confirmed by the Indian Embassy in Oman in a post on X. The mission said all five Indian nationals had been safely shifted ashore.
Merchant Shipping Faces Growing Risks
The incident highlights the risks faced by commercial vessels and seafarers operating through conflict-affected waters in the Middle East and beyond.
Merchant shipping has faced security concerns across several strategically important waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Bab-el-Mandeb and the Black Sea.
A large number of Indian nationals work aboard both Indian-flagged and foreign-flagged commercial vessels operating in these regions.
Earlier this week, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said more than 4,500 Indian seafarers were serving aboard merchant ships operating in the Persian Gulf, including 163 Indian nationals on 12 active cargo vessels.
India Raises Concerns Over Commercial Ships
India has previously raised concerns over attacks and threats involving commercial shipping and seafarers during the ongoing regional conflict.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also highlighted the issue during his address to the UN General Assembly, expressing concern over continuing hostilities and the impact on commercial shipping.
The safe evacuation of the five Indians comes as maritime security remains a major concern for countries whose nationals work aboard commercial vessels passing through the region.
