Abhishek Sharma Smashes 82 vs Afghanistan as India Sticks to Aggressive Batting Approach

Abhishek Sharma delivered a spectacular response to his recent lean patch, smashing 82 off 32 balls against Afghanistan in the first T20I in New Delhi. His innings helped India chase down 157 in under 14 overs and secure a seven-wicket victory, but the opener believes the performance was about more than his individual return to form.

India entered the series after a difficult run in white-ball cricket. The team lost its T20I series in Ireland 0-2 before suffering defeats in both the T20I and ODI series against England. Despite those results, Abhishek insisted that India’s aggressive batting philosophy remains unchanged.

The left-hander said India’s openers have always aimed to provide fast starts, particularly while chasing totals in the range of 150 to 160. His explosive approach was on full display against Afghanistan as he reached his half-century in only 22 balls.

Abhishek eventually finished with 82 from 32 deliveries, hitting seven fours and seven sixes. Along with Ishan Kishan, he put together a 121-run opening partnership from just 53 balls, giving India complete control of the chase. India reached 82/1 during the powerplay and completed the target with 38 balls remaining.

The innings also showcased the timing that has made Abhishek one of India’s most dangerous T20 batters. Whether facing pace or deliveries taken off the speed, he repeatedly found the boundary with clean and powerful strokes.

However, Abhishek was unwilling to view one outstanding performance as a solution to India’s recent results. Instead, he reiterated his belief in the approach the team adopted around two years ago, when the batting group decided to play aggressively and seek to dominate opponents ahead of the World Cup.

That strategy naturally carries risks. An attacking batter can throw away promising starts, and India’s aggressive approach has occasionally produced inconsistent results. Abhishek believes those setbacks should not force the team to abandon a method that has also delivered significant success.

He stressed that one or two disappointing series should not define India’s batting unit or alter its overall identity.

The Afghanistan match provided a strong example of what that philosophy can produce when everything falls into place. Rather than responding to recent losses with a defensive approach, India attacked from the beginning and completed the chase comfortably.

For Abhishek, the message from the match was therefore bigger than his 82. His return to form reinforced the belief that India can continue trusting an aggressive batting model even after periods when the results do not go their way.
