Reddit is preparing to introduce a major change to how people access its platform, with a new Reddit login requirement that could end anonymous browsing for most users. The company plans to require people to create an account and sign in before reading posts or exploring communities.
The move marks a significant shift for a platform that has allowed visitors to browse discussions without registration for nearly two decades.
Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman acknowledged the scale of the decision, describing it as a major change for the open internet. However, he said the company believes the move is necessary for the platform and its business.
Why Reddit Is Making Login Mandatory
The company has identified two major reasons behind the proposed change: declining search traffic and increasing automated data scraping by artificial intelligence companies.
Reddit has traditionally attracted visitors through Google searches, with users frequently adding the word "Reddit" to find discussions and personal experiences. However, AI-powered search tools increasingly provide direct answers and summaries, reducing the need for users to visit individual websites.
According to the reported figures, Reddit lost more than one million search visits per week on average during October.
The second concern involves AI companies scraping Reddit discussions to collect information for training chatbots. Much of this activity reportedly takes place through logged-out browsing.
By requiring users to sign in, Reddit hopes to limit automated access to its content while maintaining control over commercial data licensing agreements.
Revenue Rises Despite Traffic Challenges
Despite concerns about search traffic, Reddit continues to report strong financial performance.
The platform has approximately 130.3 million daily active users globally. However, its daily active users in the United States reportedly declined from 53.2 million to 50.7 million.
At the same time, revenue increased 53% to $895 million, while reported profits reached $283 million.
Advertising remains an important part of Reddit's business model. Logged-in accounts allow the platform to understand user interests and engagement patterns, supporting personalised recommendations and targeted advertisements.
What Happens to Anonymous Users?
Reddit is not expected to introduce the restrictions everywhere immediately. The company plans to begin testing the new login rules in selected countries outside the United States before considering a wider rollout.
Huffman has also indicated that users will still be able to protect their identities through pseudonyms rather than revealing their real names.
Reddit is additionally rebuilding its mobile app's incognito mode, which could allow people to browse privately without signing into an account.
The final implementation will determine how much anonymous access remains available. For now, the proposed changes signal a broader shift in how online platforms manage content access, user privacy and AI-driven data collection.
