Binance is investigating a suspected security breach as blockchain analytics firms estimate cryptocurrency losses could exceed $6 billion.

The Binance crypto hack could become the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, with reports suggesting that hackers may have stolen at least $3 billion in digital assets. Blockchain analytics firms have estimated that the potential losses could reach approximately $5.9 billion or even exceed $6 billion.

The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange has temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals across multiple networks while investigating the suspected security breach. Binance has assured users that their funds remain safe and said it will cover any losses arising from the incident.

The actual scale of the breach, however, remains unclear as investigations continue.

Binance Investigates Security Breach

Binance confirmed that its teams were investigating reports of a potential security issue. The exchange said its security personnel were reviewing relevant information and coordinating with law enforcement agencies.

Founder Changpeng Zhao, popularly known as CZ, also addressed the incident on social media, assuring users that their funds would be protected.

Zhao, who stepped down as Binance CEO in 2023 but remains a major shareholder, said he expected all user funds to be fully covered.

The exchange has also urged users to avoid suspicious messages, unofficial links and requests for account information while the investigation continues.

How Did the Binance Hack Happen?

Initial findings reportedly suggest that the breach may have involved a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer.

According to the reported investigation, the compromised device may have allowed an attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions.

Binance has stated that it has found no evidence of wallet private keys being leaked.

The exchange has not yet released a complete explanation of how the suspected breach occurred or confirmed the final amount involved.

Crypto Loss Estimates Could Exceed $6 Billion

The estimated scale of the theft has become a major concern.

Reports citing blockchain analytics firms indicate that Chainalysis estimated the potential losses at around $5.9 billion, while TRM Labs placed the figure above $6 billion.

The reported minimum of $3 billion would already surpass the approximately $1.5 billion Bybit cryptocurrency theft in February 2025.

Binance has also said that approximately $2.54 billion in cryptocurrency assets had been frozen as it worked with law enforcement agencies, blockchain intelligence firms and token issuers to trace suspicious transactions.

Tether and Circle Freeze Assets Linked to Incident

Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle have reportedly frozen assets associated with the suspected breach.

According to reports, Tether froze nearly $1.57 billion in assets, while Circle froze more than $800 million.

Freezing cryptocurrency can prevent suspicious assets from being transferred or converted through supported networks. However, frozen funds are not necessarily recovered funds, and their eventual return depends on further investigation and legal processes.

Binance Promises to Cover User Losses

Binance has stated that it will cover losses arising from the incident and that user funds remain safe.

Deposits and withdrawals across affected networks have been temporarily suspended while security checks and coordination with relevant agencies continue.

The incident has renewed questions about cryptocurrency exchange security, particularly employee device protection, internal system access and transaction authorisation controls.

The identity of the attackers, the exact amount stolen and the full circumstances of the suspected breach remain under investigation. If the higher estimates are confirmed, the incident could become the biggest cryptocurrency theft ever recorded.
