Assam Political Row Intensifies as Gaurav Gogoi Accuses Himanta Biswa Sarma of Hate Politics

Political tensions in Assam escalated sharply on Monday as Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a strong attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of indulging in intimidation tactics, hate speech, and illegal conduct ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The exchange marks a fresh escalation in the ongoing war of words between the two leaders, with personal allegations now dominating the political discourse.

Speaking during an interaction with the media, Gogoi alleged that the Chief Minister’s recent statements and actions reflected political desperation. He claimed that Sarma had crossed legal and moral boundaries by making remarks that allegedly targeted minority communities and by dragging Gogoi’s minor children into a political controversy. The Congress leader described such actions as unlawful and unethical, stating that personal attacks on family members had no place in democratic politics.

Gogoi strongly criticised what he termed as hate-driven rhetoric, asserting that openly calling for violence or genocide against any community was illegal under Indian law. He alleged that recent political messaging and statements from the Chief Minister were designed to intimidate specific sections of society rather than address issues of governance, development, and public welfare.

The Congress MP also referred to a controversial social media advertisement that was later withdrawn, which allegedly depicted the Chief Minister holding a gun while referring to illegal migration. Gogoi argued that such imagery and messaging were intended to provoke fear and polarisation, further deepening divisions within Assam’s diverse social fabric. According to him, leadership quality would be a decisive factor in the upcoming elections, and he questioned Sarma’s suitability to continue as Chief Minister.

Another major point of contention raised by Gogoi was the alleged disclosure of sensitive personal information related to his children, aged five and nine. He accused the Chief Minister of revealing passport-related details of minors, calling it a serious breach of privacy and a violation of the law. Gogoi said involving children in political battles reflected the extent to which the political confrontation had deteriorated.

Beyond personal allegations, Gogoi also accused the BJP-led government in Assam of undermining the state’s cultural and constitutional safeguards. He claimed that provisions of the Assam Accord had effectively been abandoned and alleged that thousands of acres of tribal land protected under Schedule VI of the Constitution had been handed over to corporate interests. He further alleged selective action against certain groups while claiming that individuals involved in illegal activities were being courted politically.

The political confrontation intensified further after the Chief Minister held a press conference alleging links between Gogoi’s wife and Pakistan. In response, Gogoi accused Sarma of suppressing an SIT report and attempting to divert attention through what he described as a politically motivated narrative. While Gogoi addressed the media, Sarma countered by raising questions about Gogoi’s past travel to Pakistan, specifically querying details related to visa permissions and travel locations.

As Assam moves closer to the 2026 Assembly elections, the sharp exchange highlights the increasingly confrontational nature of the campaign. With allegations and counter-allegations dominating headlines, the political battle in the state appears set to intensify further, shifting focus from policy debates to questions of conduct, credibility, and leadership.
