AUS vs BAN: Australia Drop Jake Weatherald, Recall Matthew Renshaw for 2nd Test

Australia have made a change to their squad ahead of the second Test against Bangladesh, dropping opener Jake Weatherald after his disappointing performance in the series opener.

Left-handed batter Matthew Renshaw has been recalled to the Test squad as Australia look to strengthen their top order following their shock defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin.

Weatherald scored just 23 and 0 in the first Test, while Australia were bowled out for 198 in their first innings. Bangladesh went on to secure their first-ever Test victory over Australia.

The second and final Test of the series will begin in Mackay on August 22.

Why did Australia drop Jake Weatherald?

Weatherald's place came under pressure after a difficult debut in the Test series.

The opener managed only 23 runs in Australia's first innings before being dismissed for a duck in the second innings.

Australia's batting problems were a major factor in their defeat, with Bangladesh's bowlers repeatedly putting pressure on the Australian top order.

His omission therefore gives the selectors an opportunity to bring in a more experienced option ahead of the second Test.

Matthew Renshaw returns after three years

Renshaw has been recalled to Australia's Test squad for the first time in more than three years.

The 30-year-old last appeared in Test cricket in Delhi in 2023, when he featured as a concussion substitute for David Warner.

Since then, Renshaw has remained involved in Australia's white-ball setup, playing both ODI and T20I cricket.

His return gives Australia another left-handed option at the top of the batting order.

Marnus Labuschagne remains despite poor run

Australia have retained Marnus Labuschagne, despite his continuing struggle for runs.

Labuschagne scored 31 in the second innings of the first Test, but coach Andrew McDonald acknowledged that the batter needs to convert starts into bigger scores.

His position could therefore remain under scrutiny as Australia attempt to level the series in Mackay.

Australia face must-win second Test

The second Test is effectively a must-win match for Australia if they are to avoid losing the two-match series.

Bangladesh's victory in the opening Test exposed problems in Australia's batting, particularly at the top of the order.

Australia will now hope that the inclusion of Renshaw can provide greater stability.

The squad otherwise remains largely unchanged, with Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood retained.
